My 10-Mile Journey Through Terrell, TX

When was the last time you walked ten miles in one go? For me, it used to sound like an impossible feat. But last night, as I strolled through the sleepy streets of Terrell, Texas, starting and ending at the TA truck stop, I hit a milestone—literally. Ten miles. And, trust me, every step had a story.

My 10-Mile Walk Through Terrell, TX

Getting Up and Getting Started

Alright, confession time. Ten miles wasn’t even on the agenda when I rolled out the door last night. The plan was simple—just another peaceful evening walk to clear my mind, stretch my legs, and rack up a few miles. After all, I definitely didn’t start as a distance walker. When I first laced up my sneakers, I maxed out at about a mile before feeling like I’d been hit by a truck. But last night, I felt good. Energized. And, well, slightly overconfident.

Finding Peace in the Solitude

Walking for me is more than just exercise. It’s my sanctuary—a pocket of peace in a chaotic world. No phone calls, no emails, and (thankfully) no one telling me why extended warranties “are worth it.” Just the crunch of gravel underfoot, the occasional night breeze, and stars that look better than any HD screen.

Sure, some might call it lonely. I call it incredible. Solitude doesn’t just clear my head; it gives me space to breathe, dream, and, well… spot the occasional owl.

The Owl Encounter

Speaking of owls, somewhere around mile five, I passed a tree and a flash of movement caught my eye. Cue the dramatic reveal—an owl, perched like it owned the night. I’m talking regal, Harry Potter-level owl vibes here. Naturally, I snapped a few photos—though with my phone camera and nighttime lighting, they’ll never win any photography contests. Still, it was one of those moments that makes you stop and marvel at nature doing what it does best.

Darkness and Few Pics

Speaking of photos—yeah, this particular adventure wasn’t a great one for Instagram bragging rights. Walking in the dark is liberating, sure, but it doesn’t exactly lend itself to stunning imagery. Unless blurry photos of tree silhouettes are your thing, in which case, call me a pro. The owl pic was about the only salvageable gem from my phone this time around.

Realizing My Walking Record

Here’s where it gets interesting—or dare I say, intense. As I approached the TA truck stop, something clicked. I realized I was about to hit my previous walking record of 9 miles. And if you think I was going to stop there… think again. I mean, why settle when you can crush it, right? Channeling some hidden reserve of determination (and probably fueled by the thought of a greasy diner breakfast afterward), I pushed myself for that final mile.

When my walking app finally chirped at the 10-mile mark, I felt like I’d just won an Olympic gold medal in strolling. My legs felt like Jell-O, but man, was it worth it.

Reflections from the Road

This walk reminded me why I love long walks. It’s not just about the exercise, though that’s a big plus. It’s about exploration, the thrill of seeing the world at a slower pace, and sometimes beating your own best mile by mile. Walking gives you room to breathe, to think, and to just appreciate the smaller moments—whether it’s a hauntingly quiet stretch of road or locking eyes with an owl that definitely thinks it’s cooler than you.

One thing’s for sure—I’ll be back out there soon, chasing new records, snapping blurry photos of wildlife, and soaking in every step of the adventure. If you’re thinking about taking up walking, trust me—it’s worth it. Just start with one mile, and who knows? You might be hitting 10 sooner than you think.
